Meet the Masterminds

December 4th, 2017- Modesto, CA- As part of their ongoing contemporary approach and drive for innovation, privately held Systems Integrator, Automation Group has successfully implemented a new ERP system Microsoft Dynamics as of June 5th, 2017. The implementation has enabled greater business intelligence through visibility across multiple business units in one central location.

Microsoft Dynamics AX was the right choice for the Systems Integrator as it offered the best solution with the versatility to handle a diverse business model. As Project Manager, Jesus Fuentes explains “AX is incredibly agile and flexible. As an organization we can be just as agile in our business growth.” Working closely with Jesus was Dave Jones, I.T Director who led the first phase of the project in establishing the infrastructure.

The project did not come without its’ obstacles and challenges. “We were in the process of radically changing a software culture of over 75 years, and still figuring out exactly what we wanted structured,” states Dave Jones. The team persevered, with the patience of a supportive leadership team and a commitment to not give up. “Jesus acted as our relief pitcher to pick up the energy, momentum and vision to complete the project.” adds Dave. As Jesus puts it “AX just had to work.”

As for our masterminds, Jesus Fuentes has been acting as mediator between the people and technology in resolving issues. Dave Jones is now an integral part of the Core Team to establish and monitor best practices throughout the evolution of the new ERP.

The sacrifice and long hours were absolutely worth it as Automation Group is now more supported than ever before with the technology they need to sustain their high velocity double digit growth.

Automation Group Thrives on New Organizational Structure

September 5th, 2017- Modesto, CA

After a three year journey of conceptualization and development Automation Group’s newly structured Project Management Office (PMO) has successfully taken off. The PMO serves as the backbone of their project management approach and double digit growth. Adaptable and progressive engineering firms such as Automation Group are shifting their organizational structures to a strong matrix which leverages a PMO.

The launch of Automation Group’s PMO structure began in 2015 when functional roles were strategically identified. That same year Automation Group had the foresight to hire an Engineering Manager responsible for the management of engineers rather than having engineers report directly into a project team. It was through the hiring of an Engineering Manager that the concept of an SXB Team (Solution eXperts Business) was created.

Beginning of fiscal year 2016, Randy Ruano was selected to direct the PMO which still consisted of projectized teams supported by only a few SXB engineers. The following year, Casey Noonan who began working for Automation Group as a Controls Engineer was promoted as the first “Super Project Manager” relying 100% on SXB engineers for project execution.

The company rapidly grew in sales from 2013 to 2016 thus demanding an increase in engineers. In just a few short months the SXB team acquired 15 additional engineers across three branches. By mid 2017 the PMO grew to include a Vice President (Randy Ruano), two directors (Jason Kieffer and Levi Upham), and five Project Managers (Julio Velasco, Casey Noonan, James Rhyne, Micheal Black and Robert Rash).

Gagan Pandher, SXB team Engineering Manager now leads over thirty highly trained, specialized and certified engineers across five branches. With SXB the PMO now has more horsepower than ever for larger complex projects.

Automation Group is pleased to report that they are wrapping up another banner year, far exceeding the double digit growth of prior years as a result of embracing the contemporary strong matrix organizational structure.

Automation Group announces Vice Presidents

February 13th, 2017- Modesto, CA-

Automation Group is pleased to announce the promotion of two key employees to Vice President.

Mike started with Industrial Automation Group in 2009 as a Sales Engineer. Mike was ready for a career change and had no doubts that the integrity and values IAG held were right for the clients he served. Mike evolved with the company and was promoted to Sales Manager then Director of Sales and Manufacturing. Mike helped develop a Sales Department, Service Department, and Controls Engineering team. Mike knows how to develop people and build a world- class team. Mike is driven by being part of team that contributes to a much bigger picture. As Mike says “We help feed America on a daily basis, providing solutions to the world’s largest Food and Beverage manufacturing companies!”

With all that energy invested in his work, Mike still has plenty left to spend time with his three children and wife in building drag cars and competing nationally in drag racing competitions! In Mike’s eyes, family time is just as important as spending time with his professional team; both which are family to him.

Randy Ruano started with us in 2006 as a Project Engineer with the right attitude. Randy was hungry, humble and smart. Brad Stegmann, President of Industrial Automation Group saw a bright future for Randy and quickly promoted him to Service Manager where Randy fell in love with the variety of responsibilities. After Service Manager, Randy transitioned to Project Manager, Program Manager and eventually Director of our newly formed PMO (Project Managers Office). Randy found personal reward in this role mentoring other Project Managers and showing the ropes to the next generation of leaders. Randy’s greatest pride is the culture of IAG. “Everyone looks out for each other, we all support each other’s success and we strive continuously to keep our customer’s happy at all times,” says Randy.

Randy is a wonderful leader and colleague who has an incredibly contagious laugh, hilarious sense of humor. He dedicates his time outside of work to his wife and four children. He juggles speech debates, basketball, theatre and soccer while supporting his local church group as President of the Christian Family Movement.

Georgia on My Mind

February 1st, 2017- Atlanta, Georgia   In search of the best and brightest engineering talent in the country we headed to the University of Georgia’s Spring Career Fair. Our trip began at 4:00 am with a long flight and very little sleep to Dallas, Texas  as a layover and then arriving to Atlanta, Georgia after many trains and planes. Arriving just in time for dinner we had the amusement of discovering that Georgia has as many Waffle House , Bojangles, and Fried Chicken spots as much as we Californians have of Pho Soups, Sushi restaurants and Taquerias. The food surely didn’t disappoint and I’m happy to report that I had cheesy grits, hashbrown casserole, and creamy southern style spinach for the first time in my life and it was addictive! Thanks to the Southern Hospitality of the students that we met at UGA’s Career Fair we were directed to Dawg Gone Good BBQ acclaimed to being the best BBQ joint where students dig in on smokey ribs in between classes. For those of you who have followed our articles, you know how serious IAG is when it comes to traveling and hunting down the most delicious BBQ America has to offer! Having our faces stuffed we decided to go for a stroll right by the famous Morton Building to take a moment and pause in complete admiration of the beautiful old- style architecture Georgia has to offer. As exhausted as we were the memories made were absolutely worth the journey and the talent we met has convinced us that we would be foolish not to return next year!

2016-xmas-luncheonDecember 5th, 2016- Modesto, CA- We certainly have much to be grateful for this year- it has been a fantastic financial year, new softwares have been implemented, operational processes streamlined, employees have been promoted to new roles, and numerous employees celebrated their 5th, 10th, 20th, and 30th year anniversary during the award ceremony. The tide is high and we plan to continue riding this wave as long as possible. This year’s Christmas Luncheon was truly special with both companies coming together, Industrial Electrical Company and Industrial Automation Group acknowledging their yearly achievements. Most memorable however, were the leadership team’s speeches on how grateful and appreciative they are for our company’s culture and dedicated employees!

Automation Fair 2016

atlanta-mixed-mediaNovember 9th, 2016- Atlanta, Georgia- The team had an incredible time at the 2016 Industrial Automation Fair, we all made memories we will cherish for years to come and felt very privileged to be invited for one of the largest gatherings of Industrial and Automation professionals!

BBQ, Blues, and Ribs- Now That’s the Sauce!

November 8, 2016- Atlanta, Georgia-  img_1022-1It starts with an Uber ride to the Rexel Reception in Atlanta, Georgia in observation of the massive 2016 Automation Fair. Determined to find the best damn BBQ place in Atlanta I do what recruiters do best, interview away until all screening questions have been thoroughly cleared out and we get to the final answer: Fat Matts Rib Shack and the second instinct kicks in- gotta convince the hiring manager that this is the one.

Mike is onboard and we’re off. All nine of us packed in a taxi van laughing away hysterically in the nostalgic choices of our musical taste from the 90s rapping away to snoop dog and Dr. Dre and crying tears of joy from inside office jokes that still haven’t reached their expiration.

Unable to breathe from laughter the driver opens our door and the air is filled with the incredibly sweet, sticky and smokey air of two smokers cooking in the back.

Kelly opens the door and all faces smile staring at each other thinking one united thought “are you serious ?! A live Blues Band!” We re welcomed with the best Southern Hospitality and we all venture in trying every item on the menu.

Absolute bliss! Delicious finger lickin’ good BBQ and music that vibrated and resonated right down to our core waking up our soul with a new outlook on what it means to have a business dinner.

Though it wasn’t a Thanksgiving dinner the feeling of family was across the entire table. Connected, content, happy with full bellies we couldn’t have a better bonding experience.

Stories being shouted across the table, laughter erupting and the swaying of our blues’ moves while sitting down couldn’t be ignored.

We head back to the house to have the most competitive Karaoke competition and it’s only before calling it a night that we realize – it’s just Tuesday!

This is it – this is the team at Industrial Automation Group and our culture is unlike any other.

We are not a household name, we are not on Forbes Top 50 Best Company Culture list though we are on the cover of Controls Engineering Magazine and we are not the largest system integrator. We are humble, determined and resilient and know how to enjoy ribs at a Blues Bar on a weekday- that’s our secret sauce!

On the Cover of Control Engineering Magazine!

reno-1November 5th, 2016- Reno, Nevada-  A special moment indeed! Jason Kieffer and Casey Noonan standing with our President, Brad Stegmann proudly holding their plaques of Control Engineering Magazine where their work at Industrial Automation Group was featured on the front cover of the magazine.

We were certainly spoiled with a company retreat in Reno, Nevada at the Grand Sierra Resort Casino where we had a marvelous dinner followed by a fun night of gambling, drinking, bowling and dancing! And why the sunglasses you may ask? Well, because our future is just too bright!
